G.Dumpit's 1999 Yamaha V-Star 1100 Custom

Reaper Jr.

updated: 01.02.04

In 1999 Dave Benson, the father of the DBAK (Dave Benson Air Kit, or Dad Benny Air Kit), decided that he wanted more power out of his Vstar 1100. With his engineering background, he started tinkering with the carburetors and came up with what is now known as the Maxair Engineering Air Kit. Before the inception of Maxair Engineering there were those of us that were all kind of guinea pigs for the DBAK. We all had to go through the trials and tribulations of getting our 1100s tuned. Below is the combination that worked best on my bike.

Lee Sutherburg and Dave Benson then formed what is now known as Maxair Engineering. If you want to get the best service, best quality, and best technical support, I would highly recommend purchasing the kit from Maxair Engineering. Sure you can do what I did and go through pains of trying to figure out how to get your bike properly tuned, but if you run into problems, there is nothing like having a technical forum to ask for help like the Maxair Engineering Technical Forum.

What needles do I have in my carbs?

For those that have purchased you Vstar 1100 used and want to do jetting modifications, you will need to know what needles are in there.

Manufacturer
Number of slots in needle
Stock
One
Dynojet
Six
Baron's
Five

I've used all three needles in this modification and the Stock needles do work best, and are the easiest to tune. Maxair Engineering also recommends using the stock needles. If you have one of the other needles, they will work, but it will be harder to get tuned between different riding seasons. You may also experience a flat spot, or hesitation that you just may not be able to get rid of. Different elevations and pipe selection also plays a part in this equation.

The top four pictures are of the first DBAK setup that I installed. The lower two are with a Krankvent added. If you look closely you will see the black plastic tube coming from the Hypercharger aimed toward the rear filter.
